Where It All Started

How it started…

A steak, a can of Coke and finding the cure for cancer…

Well, like most start-ups there is no exact starting point, ideas flow for a while and the team gradually forms. People gravitate towards an idea, a vision, a joint sense of purpose.

For the Brainnwave founders, the idea came from careers immersed in the world of data and seeing the power that comes from accessing the right data at the right time. A conversation that started with the cure for cancer evolved into a plan for breaking down barriers to accessing data. The founding team quickly gravitated toward this notion and the impact that could have, both social and commercial.

Anyone working with data will tell you 80% of the effort is in finding and curating the data with only 20% left analysing it to extract value. Imagine the productivity gain and innovation if that is flipped. That’s what gets us excited at Brainnwave.

“Brainnwave’s mission is to make the world’s data universally discoverable, accessible and usable.”

Our Skillset

We understand the value of data and the impact that can be had from having the right data at the right time.

We work with data publishers to help them reach new markets and we work with our customers to help them discover, connect and get the most value from data. If you have a data challenge then please get in touch we would love to talk to you.

    Steve Coates

    CEO & Co-Founder

Over a steak and a coke, the Brainnwave founding team was formed and the vision for a world where data is power and by breaking down barriers to access that data you have the opportunity to completely change the world was forged. After a career helping to build other people’s businesses, this represented a welcome change. Sealing the deal by splitting the bill 50/50, at the time he had no idea it would lead to him relocating his family to Scotland and taking up mountain biking (or pushing a bike up a hill) as a new hobby.

    Graham Jones

    CTO & Co-Founder

Living in Australia at the time, a 30 minute Skype, in which we “had him at hello”, flipped his life upside down – literally. Within a few months he relocated to the other side of the world; a long way from our very first call with investors where Graham had to dial in from his car with his heaters on full blast in the middle of the night at a ski resort in Australia. His 20-year career building large complicated data systems had all been leading up to this point. When he’s not coding he is either riding horses, climbing up mountains or skiing down them.

    George Fisher

    Head of Operations

George was one of Brainnwave’s first employees, captivated by the Brainnwave vision and eager to build the team to realise it. Since arriving in Edinburgh with just a suitcase and no accommodation, he quickly settled and became a key member of the management team. George brings a wealth of technical and commercial experience in the energy industry, along with strong leadership skills to Brainnwave. When not helping to build Brainnwave, he is mountain biking with Steve, climbing with Graham or working on his latest pet programming project.
